ELSEC

The ELSEC (Early Language Support for Every Child) programme in Barnet is a joint NHS England and Department for Education initiative to support early years and primary school children with speech, language, and communication needs. The program involves sending speech and language therapy assistants into schools to help staff identify children's needs through screening and to provide universal and targeted support for students aged 2-11. Key activities include training staff on communication strategies, developing communication-rich environments, and providing targeted interventions to improve children's communication skills.

At Northside, we have been excited to be part of this programme in Barnet since it started. The therapists and assistant therapists have supported us to develop a language-friendly environment from Nursery to Year 4. Our plan is to continue with their support throughout this year, so Year 5 and Year 6 will also receive a tailored approach supporting staff's knowledge and pupils' learning.

The ELSEC team have provided parent coffee mornings, parent workshops, staff coaching, staff training, language screeners, environmental audits, language interventions and follow-up sessions.

This support has meant a language-rich environment for our pupils and progress has been measured to be rapid.
